Today in Dumb: Fox News and Sarah Palin are outraged—outraged!—at this new White House Christmas card, because…well, that’s not entirely clear. Especially when you take a look at what the Fox Christmas card looks like.

Somehow, in the mind of Fox New’s Bill O’Reilly, the United States military is not run by the government.
In a discussion on government involvement on health care Tuesday evening, The O’Reilly Factor suddenly had an interesting and peculiar back and forth with Alan Colmes on the government’s overall effectiveness.
“Can they run the military?” Colmes asked.
O’Reilly replied: “They can’t run the military because it’s military controlled, not civilian.”
“That’s government run, it’s still the government doing it,” Coles ountered.
“But the Pentagon calls the shots,” he said.
“But the commander-in-chief is a civilin, the government runs the military well,” Colmes insisted.
“That is wrong,” O’Reilly said. “The Pentagon calls the shots on how the military operates. The Pentagon is military people.”
“That is wrong,” O”Reilly said. “The Pentagon calls the shots on how the military operates. The Pentagon is military people.”
“It’s the government,” Colmes said. “It’s the government, it’s still the government.”
O’Reilly concluded: “They work for and the government running it are two different things.”
Despite what O’Reilly Insisted, the military is led by the executive branch, which appoints the Pentagon leadership. The military’s top generals serve as advisors to the president, a civilian, who has ultimate authority over the military.

Video: Bill O’Reilly Hits Community Organizer with Umbrella, Tries to Get Him Arrested (Right Wing Watch)
Bill O’Reilly, reportedly walking out of a Newt Gingrich fundraiser held last night in D.C. […], is asked by Wisconsin community organizer Brendan Lane if he attended the fundraiser. O’Reilly ignores him and then, with no prompting, strikes Lane with his umbrella. He then says, “Hey, sorry about that.” O’Reilly, with Lane following at a distance, then walks with his now-broken umbrella over to a Capital police officer. Incredibly, you can hear O’Reilly say that he wants to press charges against the man he just struck.

Fox News falsely dubs alleged White House attacker as “‘Occupy’ Shooter”
Fact: Investigators have reportedly “found no connection between him and the Occupy protestors.”
LTMC: I’ve written about this sort of thing in the past, specifically with respect to Fox News. As I’ve mentioned before, I rarely post about Fox News because frankly, they have been discredited so many times that it can often feel like I’m just banging my head against a wall when pointing out their lack of journalistic integrity. But this is yet another example of why everyone has a duty to convince their Conservative friends and family that Fox News is not actually a legitimate news organization. They can be Conservative, that’s ok. Just tell them not to get their facts from Fox News. Fox News makes unprofessional journalistic mistakes, blatantly mischaracterizes stories (as here), and flat-out lies on a regular basis.
This head-line is not an honest mistake. It is an intentional, blatant lie that is intended to discredit the Occupy Movement. No self-respecting individual of any political persuasion ought to rely on Fox News for information, because they will simply wind up being misinformed. It’s not a reliable source of information, period.
To wit: I recently wrote a fairly long book review in which I cited countless internet media sources, including HuffPo and Reason. I will never cite Fox News. Ever. And it has nothing to do with Fox News’s Right-leaning bias. There are other Right-leaning media sources which are absolutely cite-able: the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and even the New York Post are all perfectly cite-able sources of factual information. Fox News is not. They just make too many factual mistakes to be reliable. And no one, not even Conservatives, should rely on them for news.

As a horrific child molestation scandal has rocked Penn State and gripped the nation, Fox News declared that Occupy Wall Street is every parent’s worst nightmare.
Here is the video from Media Matters:
After roughly a minute of the standard Fox News bashing of Occupy Oakland, Brian Kilmeade asked, “What is the biggest nightmare for a parent? Waking up in the morning and spotting one of your kids on one of the Occupy movements.”
No, Brian Kilmeade, Occupy Wall Street isn’t a parent’s worst nightmare, not even close. A parent’s worst nightmare is the sexual molestation of their child. A parent’s worst nightmare is that other adults knew of the abuse, but turned a blind eye and did not call the police. The scandal that has shattered the Pennsylvania State University is every parent’s worst nightmare.
A parent’s worst nightmare shouldn’t be college aged students engaged in a peaceful protest against corruption, greed, and inequality. Parents should be horrified by thousands of their children rioting because legendary football coach Joe Paterno was abruptly fired on Wednesday night. Parents should be horrified that their children are more concerned about the fate of an 84 year old figurehead of a football coach than they are the children who were the innocent victims of a sexual predator.
For anyone who thinks that Joe Paterno was unjustly fired because he lived up to legal responsibility consider that Paterno was not only the football coach, the former athletic director, and a legend, but he was also the man whose football success funded the athletic department and brought the university immeasurable prestige. Joe Paterno was a very powerful man. Paterno was not another employee of the athletic department. In some ways, he was the athletic department.
One phone call from Paterno to the police would have stopped sexual predator Jerry Sandusky years ago. If Paterno wanted the administration to notify the authorities, it would have happened. It’s about priorities. Paterno placed concern for the university that he loves and his football program ahead of a sexual predator’s victims. Joe Paterno didn’t break the law, but his decision led to the shattering of the myth of the Penn State Way.
It was mind blowingly out of touch for Brian Kilmeade to have suggested that attendance at Occupy Wall Street is every parent’s worst nightmare. No matter when it was uttered, it would have been a gross exaggeration, but for a Fox News personality to utter those words now, in the midst of this scandal is simply inexcusable and unfathomable.
To Fox News, protesters exercising their constitutional rights are worse than a sexual predator abusing young children while those around him turn a blind eye.
From Fox News to student rioters and Joe Paterno, at the end of the day it really is all about priorities.
Glad that Fox News has its priorities in order. One would be mistaken to think Fox News actually cared about children and their parents.
